Laying Out Free-form Curves

The sinuous, flowing curves of a free-form bed are all the vogue right now. And for good reason. They soften the landscape – and they're a snap to create.

Outline free-form edges on the ground with a garden hose. Gentle, sweeping curves result naturally as long as you avoid kinking the hose. Charging the hose -- capping the end and filling it with water -- makes it easy to form smooth curves.

When satisfied with the edge outlined by the hose, trace it onto the ground with powdered lime or chalk.
