Should you discover a leak, pop-off valves are easy to
replace. It's simply a matter of taking the old one off
and putting the new one on. To do so:
Read the information off the aluminum disc on the end of
the pop-off valve and buy another one with the same
specifications.
Turn the water heater off.
Turn the water supply off to the water heater. You don't
really need to turn the water off to the whole house,
though that would work. Just turn off (clockwise) the
valve on the cold water pipe that goes into the water
heater.
Drain some water from the heater. (See "To Drain A Water
Heater" if needed). You need to drain only enough water to
get the water line below the valve. If the pop-off valve
is on the top of the heater, a gallon will do it. If it is
on the side of the heater, 3 to 5 gallons will do it in
most cases.
Now disconnect the pipe from the pop-off valve and unscrew
(counterclockwise) the pop-off valve. Put some Teflon tape
or pipe dope on the threads of the new valve and screw it
in (clockwise) until snug.
Reconnect the pipe to the pop-off valve.
Turn the water supply back on.
Open a hot water faucet and let water flow until all the
air has been removed from the water heater.
Turn the heater back on. That's it. |
