Plug Types

Now let's start with the polarized plug, the one with the two different sized flat prongs. It is called "polarized" because it always observes the polarity. That is, it will always correctly align the "hot" wire in the appliance with the "hot" wire in the wall outlet. It does the same with the common. The large prong plugs into the common, the small is the "hot". The three prong plug is a polarized plug with one additional prong. The round prong is the ground wire.
