The Wires in Your
House: |
|
|
|
Before we get into what each of these prongs do, we need a
short course on the three basic wires in your house. There
is the "hot" lead. This is the wire that "brings" the
electricity into the house. It is usually black or red. It
may be other colors as well, but never white or green.
There is the ground wire. It is green or has no insulation
on it at all. It is connected to a rod or pipe that goes
into the ground somewhere outside your house. There is the
common wire, which is white. It is referred to as "common"
because one of these white wires goes to every electrical
appliance in your house and back to one common terminal in
your breaker or fuse box. |
