Abrasive Behavoir

Forty, two twenty, flint, garnet, what does it all mean? I have the answers to your abrasive questions.

Sandpaper is made from a variety of materials like flint, emery, garnet and oxides specialized for projects from removing rust to stripping paint. The most common type is aluminum oxide, the brown paper that you're used to seeing in the hardware store. It's durable and you can use it on surfaces like metal, fiberglass and wood.

Regardless of material, all sandpaper has the same range of grit. The higher the number the finer the grit, so a 40 or 60 grit sandpaper is good for rough sanding, stripping or shaping where a 220 grit is used for final buffing.

Did you know that if you pull a piece of sandpaper back and forth several times over the edge of a workbench grit side up before you use it, it makes the paper more flexible which in turn makes it last longer.

Before you start a project with a sanding block, put a strip of wide tape on the back of your sandpaper. This will give you a cutting guide because it is just the right width and it will keep your paper from ripping on the block so it will last.
