Measuring Up

Measuring anything can become difficult if you don't know the right methods and tools to use. Here are some ideas to help.

Keep your tape measure in good shape by rubbing the entire length of the tape with paste wax from time to time. When the wax is hazy, all you need to do is buff it to a shine.

When you're making several measurements to form a line, don't just make a little mark; it will be difficult to line them up when you want to connect them. Instead, make a small v with the tip pointing toward the correct spot. This way, when you use your straight edge, the will be easy to align.

If you need to measure the diameter of something round, use your combination square and a block of wood. Line the item up next to the square and the wood block on the other side. It will be simple to read the diameter measurement.

For fast measurements in the workshop, nail or glue a yardstick to the front of your workbench. You'll have a quick access whenever you need it.
