Nailing Hints

Sure nails are great for holding things together; it's the getting them in place that can be frustrating. Here is some advice to help you out!

If you want to nail into a wood that splits easily, like molding, turn the nail upside down and give it a couple taps with your hammer before driving the nail in. This will blunt the end of the nail so that it will go into the wood without splitting. (Make sure that you wear safety glasses when nailing anything!)

Lubricate a nail to make sure it goes in smoothly. You can drive the nail into a bar of soap, rub it across a candle or store your nails in a jar with some lubricating oil.

If you don't have a nail set, tap the nail below the surface with another nail. It will work just as well.

If you're trying to drive a nail into a tight spot and you're having trouble holding it, stick the nail between the teeth of a comb. It will hold it steady so you can tap it into place.
