Using Hammers

If you've ever tried to pound in a nail with the heel of your shoe, you know that a hammer is an essential tool in any home.

Every household should have a 16 ounce curved claw hammer.

Always check your hammer before you use it to make sure that the handle isn't loose or cracked, so there's no chance of it flying off. If your hammer head is loose and the handle is made of wood, try putting the head in a few inches of water overnight. The water will swell the wood so that it is nice and tight.

If the face of your hammer is gouged and rough, try filing the flat part slightly with a metal file. This should smooth it out in no time.

To protect the area around where you're hammering, try nailing through a piece of perfboard. Your nail will fit easily through the holes and the board is big enough that if you miss the nail, you won't mar the project.

To pull a nail out without marring the surface under the hammer, slip a small sponge under the head. It will cushion the hammer. Or try a rubber spatula, a jar opener or a carpet scrap.
