Workshop Safety

Safety is a secondary concern for some people, but it should be first and foremost, especially in the workshop. I have some pointers to make sure yours is ready.

Protect your eyes, lungs and ears. Safety glasses or goggles will shield your eyes from flying debris and dust while you're working on many projects. To protect your lungs from that dust, you can use a simple mask, or buy a respirator which can protect you from dust and harmful fumes. If you use power tools, you'll want a few pair of earplugs on hand, so you don't damage your hearing.

You'll also want to buy a box of disposable latex gloves, and a few pairs of heavy duty stripping gloves that will protect your hands from chemicals.

As far as safety equipment goes, you should be ready for anything. Keep a fire extinguisher, a good first aid kit and an eye wash solution on hand.

It's also a good idea to have a telephone in your workshop so if something happens, you'll be able to get to the phone quickly.
