Maintaining Fences

Fences are great for adding privacy and security to your yard. Here are some simple maintenance tips to keep that fence looking great year after year.

Each year you'll want to check the fence for loose boards and rot. Dig into the ground around your fence posts to check each post for symptoms.

Walk the perimeter of the fence and check all of the boards carefully. If there are any coming loose, all you have to do is fix them with some new nails. Make sure that you secure both the top and bottom of each loose board.

Protect your fence from the elements by applying clear, water repellent sealer (available at any local hardware store). Use a large brush to carefully apply the sealer to all areas of the fence, making sure that you get into the crevices between the boards so they are protected too. You'll want to seal the fence every few years. This will provide continued protection from the elements and keep it looking new.
