Change a Light Fixture

Light fixtures are à...well a fixture in any home, if yours are outdated, replace them, it's easy.

Turn off the power at the main circuit box. I can not stress enough how important it is to be careful and aware when doing electrical work.

Take down the old light. Take out the screws and lower the cover plate. Remove the connectors that house the circuit wires. Do not touch the wires! You need to test to be certain the power is off!

Use a neon circuit tester to check the wires, flip the wall switch and try agiain.

If there is no power, disconnect the wires and remove the nut that holds the fixture in place.

Screw the mounting bar to the electrical box. Your fixture may vary from this point out so read and understand the instructions that come with your light. Put the fixture screws in the mounting bar and twist each three turns.

WIRING: Secure the black wire from the electrical box to the black wire from the new light with a wire nut. make sure all bare wire is covered. Pull gently to be sure the nut is secure, repeat with the white wires. If you have a bare copper wire, connect it to the green grounding screw on the mounting strap. Tuck the wires into the electrical box, and secure the fixure to the ceiling.
