Door Moldings

Installing molding can be tricky, and door casings are no exception. Well I have some hints that will make the job easier.

Mark the doorframe where the casing will be placed. To do this, place a combination square along the frame where the molding should hit. Three-sixteenths of an inch in from the edge of the doorframe is standard. Trace the corner with a pencil. Then make similar marks down the doorframe to give yourself a reference for lining up the moldings.

The first cuts you'll make are for the sides. Figure out how the molding will sit on the frame and make a flush cut at the bottom edge.

One at a time hold the molding in place and line it up with the vertical mark that you made in the upper corner as well as the marks down the casing. Use a horizontal line to mark your moldings; this mark will become the inside of your miter for the casing.

Use a miter box to make a forty-five degree cut for each side.

Line up the pieces and secure the finishing nails, alternating between the frame and the wall stud. One nail every foot or so. A nail gun will make short work of this step.

Once both pieces are in place, position the molding that will be the upper casing so it's top is flipped downward. Use the top points of your miter cuts on the sides to mark the locations for the outside cuts on this piece.

Place the moldings in your miter box and make your cuts. These will be inward cuts and your marks will end up being the outer most points on the casing.

Then simply secure the top piece to the door. Fill the nail holes and touch up with paint.
