Fix a Doorbell

If your doorbell isn't working, fix it yourself. It's easy!

First, check your circuit breaker. It may be a tripped switch, in which case you can just turn it back on.

If it is getting power, check your button. Carefully take out each of the screws from the cover and gently pull it away from the wall. Use your screwdriver to tighten up all of the connections, and then grab a small paintbrush to dust off all the contacts. Then you can try testing the button again.

If that doesn't work, take the wires off the terminal screws. Carefully hold the insulated part of the wires and touch the exposed ends. If the bell rings, it's the button that's the problem.

To replace the button, all you have to do is attach the wires from the wall to the new terminal screws. Tighten them down so they're secure. Then just screw the new unit back to the wall and you're all set: it should be working fine!

While you're working on the doorbell, why not clean off those chimes too? Remove the cover and clean away all the dust and cobwebs. You should also check the connections. Then, just replace the cover.
